Apple is expanding the flexibility of the iPhone experience with a new feature in iOS 27 that could appeal to people who regularly use more than one handset. Called iPhone Handoff, the feature allows users to move their cellular service between two iPhones while keeping the same phone number.
The capability received little attention when Apple previewed iOS 27 at WWDC 2026. It appeared among hundreds of software changes listed during the keynote, but Apple did not initially provide much information about how the feature would work. A recent demonstration now offers a clearer picture of Apple’s approach to multi-iPhone usage.
A New Way to Share One Phone Number
The most important aspect of iPhone Handoff is its ability to connect two iPhones to the same mobile number. Instead of permanently assigning cellular service to only one handset, users can designate one iPhone as their primary device and another as a companion.
This could be useful for people who own different iPhones for different situations. A powerful model could serve as the primary phone for everyday productivity, while a smaller or lighter iPhone could become the preferred option for travel, exercise, weekends, or other situations where carrying a larger device is inconvenient. How Apple’s iPhone Handoff Setup Works
The feature can reportedly be configured through the Cellular section of the Settings app. During setup, users identify which iPhone will act as the main device and which handset will serve as the companion. The primary iPhone retains the user’s main eSIM. A companion eSIM is then provided to the second device, allowing both phones to participate in the same cellular setup.
