The Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket made a lot of noise this past year, pulling in about $1.3 billion since it came out. Folks say that’s from AppMagic’s data, and it shows how big this little mobile card game has gotten. It’s kinda wild to think it even beat Pokémon Go’s first year, which made just a bit over a billion.
AppMagic’s senior analyst, Sarah Thompson, said during a livestream that the numbers pretty much explain everything. She mentioned the game caught on with old TCG fans and also new mobile players. People love how easy it is to play but also how deep the battles can go.
When it first launched back on October 30, 2024, nobody quite expected the madness that came next. In the first four days alone, players spent more than $12 million and then November went totally crazy with $229.3 million spent. That was the peak month so far, according to reports.
Kenji Watanabe, who’s the main developer, said at the Tokyo Game Show that the team was honestly shocked by how big the launch was. “We knew people wanted a mobile version,” he said, “but we didn’t think it would blow up this fast.” He also said they’re focused on keeping the game fun and adding more content so people don’t get bored.
Things didn’t slow down either. On February 1, 2025, Pokémon TCG Pocket hit its biggest single-day spending record $11.2 million in just one day. That’s when the new “Space-Time Smackdown” expansion came out. It added fresh cards, cool new mechanics, and some crazy combos that made players want to jump back in.
Thompson mentioned that update “reignited” players’ excitement. She pointed out how important it is to keep bringing in new stuff events, expansions, little surprises because that’s what keeps people spending and playing longer.
The success makes sense when you look at how they built the game. Anyone with a phone can jump in, play a few rounds, collect digital cards, and feel like they’re part of something big. The system’s simple enough for beginners but still gives the hardcore fans enough to chew on. And the Pokémon art and characters everyone already loves are right there, looking amazing on mobile screens.
The game sells booster packs and cosmetic items mostly, and even though some folks complain rare cards cost too much, most players think it’s fair. A lot of fans say the game feels balanced and keeps the thrill of collecting alive without going full pay-to-win.
Pokémon’s been around forever since 1996 with the original card game and it just keeps finding new ways to grow. From video games to TV shows, movies, toys, and now mobile, it’s like it never runs out of energy.
What TCG Pocket did is proof that the brand still has that magic spark. The mobile market’s bigger than ever, and this game just showed how strong the demand still is. If the devs keep dropping good updates and keeping fans happy, this might be one of the Pokémon series’ longest-running hits yet.
They’ve already said more expansions and features are in the works, so looks like the game’s here to stay for a good long while.
