5 Indonesian Players Poised to Shine Against Australia

5 Min Read 499k Views

As Indonesia prepares to face Australia in a highly anticipated football clash on March 20, 2025, all eyes are on the Garuda Squad’s emerging talents. With a mix of seasoned professionals and dynamic young players, Indonesia’s roster features several names capable of turning the tide in their favor. Among them, five players stand out for their technical prowess, tactical intelligence, and potential to excel under pressure: Marteen Paes, Jay Idzes, Calvin Verdonk, Joey Pelupessy, and Ole Romeny. Here’s why these individuals could be pivotal in Indonesia’s quest for victory.

  1. Marteen Paes (Goalkeeper)

At 26 years old, Marteen Paes has already carved a reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s most promising goalkeepers. Born in the Netherlands to an Indonesian mother, Paes chose to represent Indonesia in 2023, bringing European discipline to the national team. Currently playing for FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie, his reflexes, command of the penalty area, and ability to organize the defense make him indispensable.

Against Australia, Paes’ experience facing physical strikers in the Netherlands will be critical. The Socceroos are known for their aerial threat and set-piece dominance, but Paes’ agility and composure under high balls could neutralize their advantage. His distribution skills may also kickstart counterattacks, catching Australia’s defense off-guard.

  1. Jay Idzes (Center-Back)

Standing at 1.91 meters, Jay Idzes is a towering presence in defense. The 24-year-old Venezia FC defender, eligible through his Indonesian grandfather, combines physicality with technical finesse. His tackling accuracy and ability to read the game have earned him praise in Italy’s Serie B, where he’s a regular starter.

Idzes’ aerial prowess will be vital against Australia’s tall forwards. Additionally, his calmness in possession allows him to play out from the back—a trait that aligns with Indonesia’s growing emphasis on building attacks methodically. Partnered with experienced defenders, Idzes could form a resilient backline to stifle Australia’s attacking waves.

  1. Calvin Verdonk (Left-Back/Wing-Back)

Versatility defines Calvin Verdonk’s game. The NEC Nijmegen full-back, eligible via his Indonesian mother, is equally adept at defending and surging forward. At 27, Verdonk boasts Eredivisie experience, with a knack for delivering pinpoint crosses and set pieces.

Australia’s reliance on wing play could be countered by Verdonk’s defensive work rate. Meanwhile, his overlapping runs may exploit gaps left by the Socceroos’ attacking full-backs. Verdonk’s stamina and two-way contributions make him a dual threat, offering Indonesia balance on the left flank.

  1. Joey Pelupessy (Defensive Midfielder)

A seasoned campaigner, Joey Pelupessy brings grit and leadership to Indonesia’s midfield. The 31-year-old Heracles Almelo anchor, eligible through his Indonesian grandmother, is renowned for his ball-winning abilities and tactical discipline.

Pelupessy’s role in breaking up Australia’s midfield rhythm cannot be overstated. His positional awareness will be key in shielding the defense, while his precise passing can transition play to attackers. Against Australia’s physically imposing midfielders, Pelupessy’s tenacity and experience in the Dutch top flight could prove decisive.

  1. Ole Romeny (Forward)

Spearheading Indonesia’s attack is FC Emmen striker Ole Romeny. The 25-year-old forward, eligible through his Indonesian roots, combines pace, clinical finishing, and intelligent movement. With 10 goals in the Eerste Divisie this season, Romeny’s form is peaking at the right time.

Australia’s center-backs may struggle to contain Romeny’s unpredictability. His ability to drift wide or exploit channels could stretch their defense, creating space for midfield runners. If service from players like Verdonk and Pelupessy is consistent, Romeny’s lethal edge might secure a historic result.

Indonesia’s lineup against Australia showcases a strategic blend of youth and experience. Paes and Idzes provide defensive solidity, Verdonk adds width, Pelupessy ensures midfield control, and Romeny offers a cutting edge upfront. Their European pedigrees and adaptability to high-pressure matches could unsettle an Australian side accustomed to dominating regional rivals.

While teamwork will ultimately determine the outcome, these five players possess the individual quality to shine on the international stage. For Indonesian fans, their emergence symbolizes a new era of competitiveness—one that could culminate in a memorable performance on March 20, 2025.
